Water and Sanitation
Project history:
AOC has been providing bio-sand water filters and latrines in a small scale in Lvea Em for a number of years. However, due to internal and external factors the program fell into decline. In 2008 the Community Development team reformed and successfully reestablished relationships with community leaders and previous beneficiaries. AOC operates by means of an agreement with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and in Nov 2008 formed a partnership with Samaritans Purse Canada to provide sustainable water and sanitation solutions for the people of Lvea Em. Over the next three years this project plans to target all fifteen communes of Lvea Em district (population 75,368).
Purpose:
To develop a sense of personal and communal responsibility among community leaders and members (women and men, boys and girls) for every person’s health, by using, caring and maintaining existing and new safe water and sanitation facilities.
Objectives:
*To improve health and hygiene practices through implementing a community-led model for the construction, education and monitoring of safe water and sanitation facilities within Lvea Em district.
*To improve the health and hygiene practices of students and teachers in Lvea Em primary schools by the construction of sanitation facilities, education and an accountability process which will ensure there continuing use, care and maintenance.
