School Health Education - Target Beneficiaries

This project focuses on students grade (1-9), youth (age 15–22), school teachers, heath workers/volunteers, key community members (equal male/female) and girls and boys from the most poor and vulnerable families. Approximately 10,000 boys and girls and 3,500 households will benefit from this project

Needs

Poverty is widespread in this district, with 6 in 10 living below the poverty line (USD43 cents a day). The poor economic status of many households has adverse effects on health, nutrition, access to education and participation in community activities. A lack of basic health care knowledge and inappropriate treatment of injuries and illnesses cause 80% of children and adults to suffer needlessly from wholly preventable sickness and disease, increasing family debt burden, driving them deeper into poverty.
1.56% of population in Lovea Em district is affected by HIV/AIDS. Misconceptions and discrimination are widespread, and many don’t understand or care to take responsibility for their actions.
Only 54% of school age children complete primary school, of those going on to secondary school 23% drop out by grade 9 and a further 24.7% before grade 12.
